A quick-thinking bank teller has saved a NSW woman from losing her entire life savings to a scammer who pretended to be the conveyancer she was using to purchase a house. The woman, aged in her 50s, walked into a NAB branch in Erina on Monday wanting to transfer $6 million to a conveyancer to secure a property. She had an invoice that had been sent via email, which had all the correct details the woman thought were required to transfer the funds.
” The scammer had managed to compromise the conveyancer’s business email and obtain all the relevant information about the purchase of the house. They then plucked a figure out of the air and altered the payment details, so the money would go straight into their own account. “Everything looked legitimate, they’d made it come from the conveyancer’s email address and they had information of the purchase,” Alvaro said. Australians lost $16.
