The Columbus NAACP is urging voters to vote no on the nearly $100 million levy that Columbus City Schools is placing on the November ballot.
The Columbus chapter of the NAACP is urging residents to vote no on the nearly $100 million levy that Columbus City Schools voted Tuesday to place on the November ballot.that, if approved by voters, would raise a permanent 7.7-mill levy would cost $269.50 per $100,000 of appraised property value and would first be assessed in 2024. The board initially proposed the levy in late June by sending it to the Franklin County Auditor's Office to certify the necessity of the levy.
Three mills, or $38,612,000 per year, would go toward operating expenses, while 4.7 mills, or $60,492,000 per year, would be for maintenance of the district's more than 100 school buildings under the proposal that was approved 7-0 by the board. In a Wednesday statement, NAACP President Nana Watson said that the district has not engaged with the community about the levy and is instead trying to"dictate" terms to the public.
"The Columbus Board of Education has not been good stewards of the taxpayer's money," Watson said."This community should not allow the board to dictate to this community on how they want our tax dollars to be used."
