The towering, funnel-shaped cloud formations were spotted in parts of New Jersey on Wednesday.
A cone-shaped cloud was spotted Wednesday over northern and central parts of the state. This photo was snapped by Jacqueline Ho on Route 27 in Highland Park.Funnel clouds? Missile launch? Aliens? The speculation was as fascinating as the formations.The clouds were harmless vapor plumes from the state’s power plants and refineries, according to meteorologists.
“On a normal day, we see the steam and smoke from these plants dissipate quickly,” said Eric Hoeflich, a meteorologist with thein Mount Holly. “But, yesterday the conditions were such that the vapor did not immediately dissipate and instead lingered in the sky, causing these tall, thin cloud formations.”
Photos posted on social media Wednesday afternoon showed a cone-shaped, almost tornado-like cloud emerging from the sky over northern and central parts of the state. If you were driving anywhere in NE NJ, looking east toward I-95, you may have seen some weird columns of clouds developing. Well, we have an explanation!
