Winds up to 50 mph and flooding along the Jersey Shore are expected from the storm, but potential snowfall amounts remain uncertain, the weather service said.
A powerful coastal storm is expected to form Saturday and could bring snow, high winds and coastal flooding to New Jersey this weekend, though specifics about snowfall remain uncertain, forecasters say.
If the storm tracks along the East Coast, New Jersey could be facing another weekend of shoveling and plowing snow. A track farther west off the coast would decrease the snow threat. “While confidence in specific forecast details remains low, the storm could bring at least portions of the area moderate to significant impacts from snow, strong winds, and coastal flooding,” the National Weather Service said early Wednesday. The earliest the storm would arrive is Saturday night and continuing through Sunday. “For coastal communities, increasing concerns for strong onshore winds and the potential for coastal flooding with the timing of the full moon on Sunday,” the weather service said. The chances for snow range from around 40% near I-95 to 50% near the Jersey Shore for accumulations greater than 2 inches, according to the National Weather Service. For 6 or more inches of snow, probabilities reach around 30% near I-95 and 40% near the Jersey Shore.“How fast the storm strengthens will be a determining factor in the final track of the storm this weekend and whether or not it moves up the East Coast,” The National Weather Service forecasts northeast winds of 15 to 25 mph gusting to 25 to 35 mph inland Sunday, with coastal winds of 25 to 35 mph gusting up to 50 mph. These strong winds could cause damage and power outages while pushing water onto coastal areas, creating the potential for coastal flooding, the weather service said.Ahead of the potential storm Potentially record-breaking cold temperatures with wind chills dropping below zero will continue through Friday. The National Weather Service has extended a cold weather advisory through 10 a.m. Thursday for most of New Jersey. A strong storm is expected to rapidly form off the southeast coast Saturday and could bring a nasty combination of snow, high winds and coastal flooding to New Jersey this weekend.Wind chills will plunge to minus 10 to minus 15 degrees across much of New Jersey tonight, with the coldest values near minus 20 degrees in higher elevations. Daytime highs will remain well below freezing through Friday, with overnight lows in the single digits and negative single digits Thursday and Friday nights. The combination of prolonged arctic cold and significant length of the cold air mass is rare for New Jersey, forecasters say.N.J. school closings, delayed openings due to cold and snow for Wednesday The Advance Local Express Desk uses AI tools to assist in producing content, which is reviewed and edited by staff.
