Forecasters are keeping an eye on a possible coastal storm in the eastern U.S. that could merge with a different storm system coming from the west.

Heavy rain could be heading to the New Jersey region this weekend, depending on the track of a potential coastal storm and another storm system, according to forecasters from AccuWeather and the National Weather Service.

“Guidance in general still remains spread in how these two features interact,” the weather service said. “Some deterministic guidance and ensembles show the surface low ejecting off the coast near the Hampton Roads/Norfolk area and sliding up the coast, while other members show the low pushing eastward off the Outer Banks and out to sea, with only the cold front bringing some showers.”

“Strong rip currents, rough seas and even beach erosion could impact beach-goers from the Carolinas to Maine Thursday through the weekend,” AccuWeather noted. Two of those disturbances, also known as tropical waves, have a 40% chance of developing into a tropical depression or a named tropical storm in the next seven days, according to theN.J. weather: Strong thunderstorms could fire up today, with bigger threat on Wednesday
