New Jersey voters show softened views on immigration and growing concern over aggressive enforcement, a Stockton poll finds.

New Jersey voters show softened views on immigration, broad support for legal pathways, and growing concern over aggressive enforcement, a Stockton poll finds. Two‑thirds of voters said immigration enforcement under the Trump administration has gone too far, and 59% believe deportation tactics used by U.

S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement make communities less safe. Only 12% said enforcement has not gone far enough. The shift extends to broader views of immigration. Forty‑four percent said coming to the U.S. should be less difficult — an increase since Stockton last asked the question in October 2024 — while 25% said it should be harder. Nineteen percent said current laws strike the right balance. Support for legal immigration was especially strong. Three‑fourths of voters said immigration is good for the country, including majorities of Democrats, Republicans and independents. Overall, 82% backed expanding pathways for people to immigrate legally. Most voters also said immigrants benefit the economy: 76% believe immigrants add useful skills and labor, while just 16% said the country does not need immigrant workers. And 61% said immigration has no effect on job opportunities for them or their families. Views on crime were similarly moderate. A narrow majority, 52%, said immigration has no impact on crime rates, while 29% believe it makes crime worse. Still, partisan gaps remain stark. While 96% of Democrats said enforcement has gone too far, 89% of Republicans approve of the Trump administration’s immigration approach, and 78% said ICE’s tactics make communities safer. “You can see broad, bipartisan agreement on the value of immigration, but real divides remain on how it should be enforced,” said Alyssa Maurice, assistant director of the Hughes Center and head of polling. Generational divides also surfaced. Voters younger than 45 were far more likely to say enforcement has gone too far and that ICE makes communities less safe, compared with older voters. The poll of 700 registered voters was conducted Feb. 6 to 16. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.7 percentage points.Jelani Gibson is a politics reporter for NJ.com.
