'We have recognized our error,' the township council president said after the ban drew national attention.

The Edison Township Council unanimously passed an ordinance at its Jan. 8 meeting repealing its previous ordinance establishing rules of decorum at public meetings, after the new policy upset residents and state lawmakers, and caused an uproar on social media.

“Therefore, I am glad that we have recognized our error and can move on with the more important business of Edison,” she added. “Democrats in Edison, NJ have banned the American Flag, the U.S. Constitution, and other ‘props’ from their Council Meetings,” the state Republican Party said on its social media account last month. The post and other social media messages included video of a speaker at an Edison meetingIn a statement, then-council president Nishith Patel apologized for the “confusion” over the ordinance and said neither Edison officials nor the new rules banned American flags from meetings.
