A research team had sought access to a Cedar Grove cemetery to research the burial of slaves of helped build the town, but that was met with resistance.

the accusation by Vanderhoof that race was a factor in the delays and inaction on his research request,Zichelli said he took offense at Vanderhoof’s assertion that Cedar Grove wasn’t interested in acknowledging the contributions of the Black slaves who helped build the township. The slaves are believed by Vanderhoof to be buried in the Doremus family cemetery alongside their white owners.

Vanderhoof said a goal of his project was to get the nearly all-white town to acknowledge the contributions of its Black ancestors.
