Atlantic City High School teacher Joseph A. Scalfaro also picked up the girl at her home and brought her to local parks, the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office alleges.

obtained recorded audio conversations in which Scalfaro admitted he had a sexual relationship with the girl, authorities said. Police also viewed text messages between Scalfaro and the teen. In addition, Scalfaro sent the student “coded messages” from his school email account referencing their meet-ups, the court document says.

The teacher checked into the Quality Inn in Galloway on March 8 and was at some point joined by the teen, official said. The student reported the relationship to authorities on Sept. 20 and was interviewed by investigators three days later. Scalfaro was still listed as a social studies teacher on the district’s website on Tuesday morning. He has been a public employee since 2009 and is paid an annual salary of $88,230, according to state pension records.

School officials didn’t immediately return messages from NJ Advance Media. It wasn’t immediately clear if Scalfaro had an attorney who could speak on his behalf.
