Just when everyone thought the New Jersey State Police ran out of ways to humiliate its leadership and disgrace the uniform, we learned that troopers recently decided they cannot do their jobs without upholding a longstanding tradition of abusing minorities.
Attorney General Matt Platkin has launched a criminal investigation, but the real question remains why he and Gov. Murphy continue to tolerate a rogue agency that makes up its own rules, one year after it refused to adoptthat would have audited motor vehicle stops – and after Superintendent Col. Pat Callahan pledged that the NJSP would “readily accept and embrace the scrutiny and oversight that comes with serving our communities.
“De-policing is no better than defunding. It’s the same thing, with the same result: a less safe public,” said“Backing off of the Attorney General’s pilot program was not the right answer -- all that did was send the message that the lawlessness won out. If the organization is ungovernable, then it needs to be changed until it becomes governable. We can’t afford to have an organization as important as the New Jersey State Police not doing the job its troopers were sworn to do.
