Air quality monitoring stations in 13 counties scattered around New Jersey showed ranges well into the “red” zone, even worse than Tuesday

turned already bad conditions much worse throughout the state.

The air quality index, or AQI, measures how polluted the air is at that moment on a 0-500 scale. Anything below 50 is considered a great day to get outside, and anything above 300 means everyone should stay inside with the doors and windows shut, according to the EPA.Camden, Hudson, Passaic and Union counties had the worst air quality levels on Tuesday hitting the orange, or “unhealthy for sensitive groups,” range.

Air quality is measured through the air quality index, also known as AQI. The Environmental Protection Agency measures five major air pollutants to create six levels of concern. The higher the AQI the more unhealthy the air quality gets. The direction of the wind flow from Canada is to blame for the wildfire smoke reaching New Jersey, said Ben Charles, lead meteorologist at WeatherWorks.

“It doesn’t take a lot of a lot of air to kind of keep lofted, it just gets caught up in the lower level winds,” Dodd said.
