The East Orange school board held a packed public meeting on Oct. 16 where 93 layoffs were announced to offset an estimated $25 million budget shortfall.East Orange school officials violated state rules when they failed to notify the state Department of Education that the Essex County district’s budget was deeply in the red, state officials said.
Citing a $25 million shortfall by the end of the current school year, the school board voted last week to cut 93 positions, including “When sometimes you have folks in office and there’s oversights, and then you have someone come in and they start dotting the ‘I’s and crossing the ‘T’s and looking into the fine print, it’s an oversight. I believe that we’ve got to get better with that,” he told CBS News New York.
