Ben Gravy, a novelty surfer from Ventnor, has his eyes on surfing the entire globe.
The answer is a little bit Jersey and a lot of Gravy.
While Florida, California and Hawaii remain the hotspots for professional surfers, Gravy sees the Garden State as fertile ground to spread his unique style, which has become known in the surf world as “novelty surfing” – chasing waves that are unique, odd, small or thought-to-be-un-surfable, and sometimes big and dangerous.He calls himself a “semi professional surfer,” and says his exploits are not always about the surf, but fun and inspiration for others.
The recent, three-coast trip was an idea he had three years ago, but he knew it’d be expensive and take serious planning. It came to fruition due to Red Bull, which recently greenlit his pitch. Again, in a departure, he uses long soft boards - a staple with beginners - because with few exceptions, he does not need high performance. Soft tops are more buoyant, they get him into more waves for longer, especially in odd conditions. Plus, they’re more forgiving when surfing near rocks, or in Gravy’s case, over rocks.
