The state’s seven-day average for confirmed cases was 1,977 on Wednesday, up 20% from a week ago, and up 138% from a month ago. That’s the highest seven-day average since Feb. 10, though still below the peak average of 33,459 daily positive tests on Jan. 7. There were at least 74 people discharged in that same 24-hour period ending Monday night, according toNew Jersey’s transmission rate was 1.10 on Wednesday, up from 1.09 on Tuesday. When the transmission rate is over 1, that means each new case is leading to at least one additional case and the outbreak is expanding.
The BA.2 strain of COVID-19 has been spreading in New Jersey for weeks, though at much lower rates than the omicron surge in December and January. Officials have said the omicron “stealth” subvariant appears to spread more easily but generally does not cause more severe illness.
