N.J. prisons, halfway houses suspend visits due to COVID omicron wave

Inmates will be provided free alternate ways to communicate with loved ones, state officials said.

“For the safety of all, with the omicron surge, the Department temporarily suspended visitation. In the interim the Department is providing alternative free modes of communication for individuals to remain in contact with their loved ones via snail mail, jpay, videograms and phone,” said Liz Velez, a spokeswoman for the New Jersey Department of Corrections.NJDOC online map.

Figures on the current coronavirus case totals among inmates and officers at state correctional facilities were not immediately available. A state spokeswoman told NJ Advance Media that the policy went into effect Dec. 30 and will be revisited in a week. She added that the policy will not impact attorney visits.
