The chef who got his start in an N.J. high school's culinary program
Freehold Regional High School graduate Chef Danny Garcia, left, won the 21st season of "Top Chef." Garcia is a 2010 graduate of Freehold Regional High School and attended Freehold Regional High School District’s Culinary Arts & Hospitality Management Magnet Program.Garcia’s competition-winning dish was inspired by his Dominican and Puerto Rican roots.
The New Jersey high school grad thanked his wife, Chef James Kent, friends and family in a lengthy Instagram post after winning.The recent season of “Top Chef” was filmed mostly in Wisconsin although the last two episodes were shot on a Caribbean cruise ship.Garcia said his $250,000 prize will go toward he and his wife’s “brownstone fund.”Garcia described Time and Tide concept as a classic New York City steakhouse seen through the lens of a seafood restaurant.
“This restaurant is my child at the moment,” Garcia said. “And then once we can figure this out and make it perfect and it can operate without me, then there’s like, I can do this and I can do that.
