Nevaeh Rios, a 14-year-old freshman at Carteret High School, missed her track meet's heat since she lacked the proper support, her mother said.A family in Carteret has filed a due process petition with New Jersey, following a track meet they said their daughter with special needs missed because she lacked the proper support.
At the track meet on April 8 at St. Thomas Aquinas High School, she was slated to run in the girl’s 100-meter race. She made her way to the starting line, by following her teammates, but when the race started, she didn’t go and missed out on the race, said her mother, Erica Rios. After the initial 100-meter race for the girls, the coaches had three girls race again with Nevaeh, Rios said. They had previously raced, so they weren’t giving it their full potential, she said. Nevaeh won the race, Carney said.
When the coach reached out to Rios to explain the situation, they said they changed the number of lanes from six to five so Nevaeh could have an empty lane on each side of her, Rios said. But she was unsatisfied with the explanation, noting it was a 100-meter race and the girls ran in a straight line.
“Ms. Rios’ position that some injustice or harm has been done to Nevaeh is the furthest thing from the truth, and it seems to be based on Ms. Rios’ continued mistaken belief that there was some ‘incident’ at the April 8th meet that didn’t actually happen.”
