who became a prominent figure in the “right to die” movement after his involvement in the landmark Quinlan case, has died. He was 93.
The Quinlans faced a firestorm of legal and moral opposition from throughout the nation and world. Doctors, citing religious and legal reasons, refused her parents’ request to remove her from her respirator once her condition was deemed irreversible. The long public battle over whether Quinlan should be disconnected from life-sustaining medical devices is what finally turned the nation’s spotlight on end-of-life care choices.
Ten years after the Quinlan case, he aided a similar patient, Nancy Ellen Jobes, who was in a persistent vegetative state, a form of coma.
