Montclair residents are working to preserve the James Howe House.
A general view of the James Howe House at 369 Claremont Ave in Montclair on Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2022.Efforts to preserve a piece of Black history in Montclair took a big step forward on Thursday when a community group announced it had purchased the James Howe House, the colonial era dwelling that was willed to a free slave by his master in 1831.
Latortue said the group is planning a series of fundraisers to restore the house and pay off the mortgage. Fears that the house would be sold once again prompted the Friends to ramp up fundraising and make one final offer, for $400,000, which Van Dyk accepted. He did not respond to a request for comment on Thursday.
