Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop welcomes 14 Ukrainian kids who have fled the war.
Mayor Steven Fulop hosted an informal gathering at City Hall to welcome the Ukrainians to what is their new home – at least temporarily – the city that rises in the shadow of Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. The mayor offered the services of the city’s Department of Immigrant Affairs to the Ukrainian mothers and aunts who suddenly find themselves a long, long way from home.
Carlo’s Bakery sent over cupcakes with blue and yellow frosting, and the younger kids got razor scooters. The older kids got to sit up on the City Council dais. For a little while, the war seemed far away. “She’s not old enough to really understand what’s going on, but I try to explain that there are bad guys occupying our land, which is why she can’t be with grandma and dad,” Holovko said through an interpreter.
Technically, the Ukrainians at City Hall on Monday were not refugees in the legal sense. They entered the country on tourist visas after the war broke out, and now it’s too dangerous to go back. Darynol Sydoruk, 19, is interviewed after a ceremony in Jersey City council chambers where Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop welcomed them on Monday, April 18.Olga said she tries not to think too far ahead, to take things day by day. “These kids are not quite adults yet,” she said. “So it’s mentally challenging.”
President Biden said last month that the U.S. would accept 100,000 Ukrainian refugees. Ukrainians fleeing the war can also seek asylum in the United States – but they must somehow get here first.that about 3,000 Ukrainians had massed in Tijuana and were seeking to enter the United States at the Mexican border. The U.S. has already granted Temporary Protective Status to approximately 75,000 Ukrainians who were in this country when the war broke out.
