Newark is expanding its ShotSpotter system. This acoustic sensor is part of a system in Syracuse, N.Y.Proponents of gunshot detection systems say they help save lives and catch criminals by automatically alerting first responders to the time and place of shootings faster than 911 calls.which occasionally mistake car backfires or other booms for gunshots, saying they can lead to over-policing of neighborhoods where their audio sensors are installed.

But she noted that the city introduced ShotSpotter following a “drastic increase in homicides” during the 2000s. ShotSpotter uses specialized acoustic sensors, typically mounted on lampposts or buildings, designed to identify and report the sound of gunfire. Multiple sensors mounted in separate locations but linked in a network record the sound of the same shot or series of shots fractions of a second apart and use triangulation to determine where it came from.
