Some Christian leaders say the ceremony mocked 'The Last Supper,' but Olympics organizers say the scene was misinterpreted.
Bishop James F. Checchio of the Diocese of Metuchen is joining Christian leaders worldwide in condemning a performance from Friday’s 2024 Paris Olympics Opening Ceremonies.The elaborate Olympics opening ceremony drew praise last week for its colorful celebration of art and culture. But, it also drew controversy for featuring numerous LGBTQ+ icons and imagery some said mocked religion.

But, Olympic organizers said religious leaders misinterpreted the scene, which was meant to evoke the Greek god Dionysus and a French dinner party.
“This ceremony unfortunately included scenes of mockery and derision of Christianity, which we deeply regret. We would like to thank the members of other religious denominations who have expressed their solidarity with us,” said the French Conference of Catholic Bishops in “My wish isn’t to be subversive, nor to mock or to shock,” said Jolly, who is gay. “Most of all, I wanted to send a message of love, a message of inclusion and not at all to divide.”
