Mike Hall, a New Jersey musician, is redefining the bass guitar as a tool of creative expression. Inspired by bass-playing virtuosos, Hall combines elements of flamenco, slapping, and two-handed tapping to create a unique style. After years playing in bands, Hall launched a solo career under the name 'Mike Hall Bass' and has gained recognition for his inventive and stylistic approach to the instrument.
, the bass guitar is not simply a background instrument; it’s a tool of creative expression. Inspired by bass-playing virtuosos such as Red Hot Chili Peppers Flea, Metallica’s late/great Cliff Burton, and Victor Wooten, the New Jersey musician has created a new appreciation for the instrument with his unique style of play, combining elements of flamenco style strumming, slapping, and two-handed tapping.
Hall played upright bass from middle and high school for six years but felt stifled creatively. “I wasn’t a fan of playing just what’s in front of me without improvisation or individual take of a song,” said Hall. “It felt stale, ultimately.”in 2009. The band toured across the tri-state area with Plain White T’s, Lifehouse, Blondie, Switchfoot, and Joan Jett & The Blackhearts. The band hit an impasse in 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic shut down much of the music industry.
Even as Hall didn’t join a band, he experienced rare success as a solo bassist. His cover of Billie Eilish’s” caught the attention of Pete Skjold of Skjold Design Guitars in Ohio. Out of the shared love for music, Hall gained a sponsorship. His 2024 cover of DragonForce’s power-metal classic “Through The Fire and Flames” is his crown jewel at overThere is an appetite for inventive, stylistic bass playing beyond what is seen in mainstream music.
