Wildlife experts say sick pelicans in California are suffering from starvation-related issues, but the cause remains unclear.

More than 180 sick pelicans have been found across Southern California in recent weeks, sparking concern over the mystery illness.A cluster of two-dozen sick brown pelicans found on a pier in Newport Beach this week has led to a growing concern of cases of sick and dying pelicans along the California coastline. According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the pelicans, once on the endangered species list but now protected under state law, have been found in a severely emaciated condition.

Some wildlife experts have noted the pelicans are suffering from starvation-related issues.According to Elizabeth Wood, a veterinarian at the Wetlands and Wildlife Care Center in Huntington Beach, many of the pelicans being cared for are dehydrated and have severe malnutrition.'There's lots of hypotheses right now, but it does seem that they're not finding enough fish,' Wood told CBS News.
