Mykki Blanco on judging (and receiving an award) at the annual Sicilia Queer Film Festival in Palermo, Italy.

. Last week’s event featured a diverse range of programming. There was a tribute to French director Marie Losier, who has directed films on pioneering artist Genesis Breyer P-Orridge, and discussions on the 50th anniversary of the moon landing through the lens of Bertolucci and Ceronetti, and of course two international competitions devoted to emerging and independent filmmaking.

Blanco was more than just a judge, though. He received the festival’s Nino Gennaro Award, named after a Sicilian poet and LGBT activist, which honors an artist’s commitment to disseminating queer culture.

Blanco cites Barrow as one of his all-time favorite artists. “She’s a fashion designer but you see her hand in so much of what she creates: sculptural earrings, hand-painted prints, unexpected hand sewn rivets and twists,” Blanco describes. “Garments that are extremely well made but almost fragile.” Barrow gave Blanco the dress a few years ago, but this was his first time he wore it out to an event. He clearly did well to save it for such a grand occasion.
