Two players Padres need to produce are activated off injured list as team has best offensive night of homestand
would love it if in a few days or weeks they are getting what they expect from Luke Voit and Wil Myers. For now, the pair of erstwhile sluggers being activated off the injured list Tuesday was essentially a Hail Mary.
Myers’ 90-foot single in his first at-bat drove in the Padres’ first run, and Voit walked twice and scored a run. Clevinger, making his second start back from Tommy John surgery, departed with two on and one out in the fifth. With Steven Wilson in, the Cubs tied the game on an errant throw by Nola as the catcher attempted to throw out a base stealer at third, and Clevinger was charged with a third run.
Sure, it would have been better if there could be an emphatic declaration that Myers and Voit were going to be the genesis of an offensive explosion. But basically, the thinking in activating the two veterans was simply that it couldn’t hurt.
