For writer and activist Mya-Rose Craig, anxiety-stoking deadlines are offset by late-night dancing and walks with requisite bird cameos.
The value of persistence carries over to long-running existential concerns. “Birds serve as a kind of ‘canary in the coal mine’ for climate change,” Craig writes in the introduction—and you could say the same for today’s cohort of young activists, however much it’s an unasked-for mission. Craig describes peers who “all say, ‘I wish I could have enjoyed my teenage years doing the stupid things that all the past generations got to do. Instead, we are trying to save the planet.
Eventually I get up and open my curtains; the sun pours through the window, and I realise that I feel well rested and that maybe allowing myself that extra hour in bed was a good thing after all. I take a deep breath. I have time. It’s all okay.I’m at the library and am faced with a major decision: I look between the lift and the long, winding stairs. I’m tempted to be lazy, but then go for the stairs instead. Five floors later I can feel my legs burning, but I also feel like a fitness queen.
