My Son Scraped His Arm. I Almost Missed the Warning Sign That It Was Life-Threatening

When I saw it, I knew we had to go the hospital immediately.

Samantha Silver is a content creator and beauty editor in London. She recently shared her 10-year-old son Leo’s harrowing journey with a bacterial infection that began with a simple playground scrape—and the one warning sign she wants all parents to know.

Here’s what she toldOn Thursday last week, my son Leo scraped his arm on the playground at school. This is completely usual—he’s a really sporty kid, and he was playing football. He came home from school and said he scraped his arm and that the nurse had cleaned it and put a plaster on it—nothing unusual. Later that evening, I changed the plaster.

It was a completely normal looking scrape, not bleeding, nothing strange. The next night, Leo came into my bedroom at 9 o’clock and said his armpit was aching. I just thought he didn’t want to go to sleep. I gave him some pain reliever and sent him to bed, and all was fine.

On Saturday morning, he played padel with some friends and I sat on the bench watching with another mom. When he came off the court, he said his arm was aching. But within seconds, he was playing football with his friends. Later, he went to a friend’s party and when he came home, around 5 o’clock, he said, “My arm is still really hurting.

” He had on a T-shirt and he lifted his arm, and I could see a red line tracing from his elbow, where the scrape was, up to his armpit. I had read somewhere that a red line is a sign of.

Our friends took our younger son, and we went to the hospital. My husband walked out of the house without even his phone, thinking we’d be in and out. At A&E, they took Leo to triage straight away.

He still had no temperature, and he was actually having the time of his life, thinking this was so cool—all these doctors! They did blood tests and an X-ray to check on the swelling in his arm. Once the diagnosis was confirmed—lymphangitis—he received an IV of antibiotics. We spent the night at the hospital but went home the next day.

Leo is now on oral antibiotics and has a follow-up appointment later this week. He’s doing absolutely fine. He’s back at school, though he’s been sitting out sports because his arm is still swollen. He is very, very lucky.

Had we not gone to the hospital when we did, it could have been so much worse. When I shared this story recently on social media, I didn’t think much of it, but I had so many people DM me about this red line—how they didn’t know about it, how they would have ignored it themselves. My post went viral. I’m so pleased because this could save children if parents are aware of this.

This red line is a sign of an infection spreading through the lymphatic system—in my son, we could see it heading toward his lymph nodes in his groin and armpit. My message for other parents: Trust your gut. Don’t listen to your husband, or anyone who disagrees. If you think that your kid needs to be seen, go get seen.

Don’t think, “It could be nothing” or “I’m being silly. ” If I hadn’t taken Leo on Saturday night to the hospital, if we had waited, we could be in a completely different scenario.
