His school's 'rules' are not accomplishing much.
Oh, parenting in the digital age… Our son’s school Chromebook has become a gaming console in disguise. Despite the school’s filters, the kids have created shared docs with endless game links. It’s his primary focus right now—even at school.
The “honor system” isn’t working. We have had all the talks and are trying to get better school oversight, but what do we do here? At home, he has to sit where we can see his screen, he has limited use, etc. We are trying to solve the issue at school. My Wife and I Brought a New Person Into Our Bedroom. It’s Going to End Our Marriage. So, unfortunately, this problem extends far beyond just your son’s personal gaming. If the entire class is doing it, then you have to approach the issue by trying to help everyone. You say you’re trying to get better school oversight, but if you haven’t already, I would first bring my concerns to the teacher to see if they know just how much gaming is taking place. If they do and just feel as if there’s not much they can do—the teacher is likely the only person in the classroom if there are no assistants—then I would ask what parents could do to help the situation. Maybe parents can sign up for shifts to act as the teacher’s backup for a few weeks to get the class refocused. Maybe they have another idea. But I would rally behind the teacher and gather support from other parents in the class in order to change the overall expectation and classroom culture. Kids do what their friends do, so realistically, I don’t think that changing only the behavior of one or even a few of the kids will make the class culture all that different. In order to curb gaming at school, this needs to be a group effort. This may seem like a low-stakes question, but I am truly concerned. My 15-year-old daughter is an extreme introvert, and strongly dislikes big groups of people and large events. She finds it difficult to make conversation and is seemingly uncomfortable even with talking with some of her classmates, even those she has known for years.
