How My Passion for Walking Helps Me Motivate Other Women

Over the years, we have seen improvement in the ladies walking. If someone joins and is unable to do the full distance, they can modify the route to a distance that best suits them. Our walks are long and hilly, but we try to limit the amount of declines as it is easier on the knees. Our walks are always engaging and inspiring—we keep a steady pace, stopping now and then to take a picture if we see something interesting. We occasionally have social functions and we also walk for charity.

My walking journey has been extremely rewarding. To simply be able to get out there and enjoy the day is truly a blessing. Walking doesn’t cost you anything, but. Things I used to run by in the past, I now stop and explore. It allows me to stay in the moment and put aside the worries of the day for a little while. It reminds me to be grateful and appreciative of everything life has to offer, to enjoy the simple pleasures, like taking a nice deep breath and feeling the breeze on my face.

There was a time when I developed a clot in my calf about three years ago and walking became a real challenge for me. Just to venture across the street seemed like twenty miles. But, I refused to throw in the cards. I was unable to join the “Sistas” for walks, which set me back. So, I did what I had to do to get rid of the clot and regain my health: I was on blood thinners for three months and slowly stayed active as best as I could, but my leg was still very weak.

I recommend walking to anyone who is looking to improve their cardiovascular fitness. It is free. It doesn’t cost you anything and you can do it at any time. It can be done alone, or with friends. No matter where you are in your fitness journey, your best is always good enough. You can always work on getting better. Be proud of yourself and share your accomplishments…you never know who you may motivate.
