Quite often if the weather is nice enough when I pick up my kids from daycare, we go straight to the park. My mother-in-law regularly reminds me that she would love to join us anytime we are willing to have her. I find her overbearing, but the kids really enjoy hanging out with her, so I frequently invite her to join us. Last week, we tried out a new playground and it had a slightly taller slide than my 2-year-old has ever played on.
When my husband got home that night, he asked my daughter how the new slide was. He said his mother had called him on her way home from the playground and told him that she felt the new slide I’d let our daughter go on was incredibly unsafe and suggested that he talk to me about increasing my supervision/caution when I’m out with the children, especially somewhere new.
Near the end of last year, I was at a parent-teacher conference with Ms. G, Ray’s teacher. We went over his work and grades, his interactions with the other students—the normal stuff. I asked if Ms. G could, in places where she had discretion, grade Ray more harshly than she’s been doing. It’s not like elementary school grades mean much of anything, and a lower-scoring report card would knock some of that excessive ego out of him. Ms.
Honestly, what difference does it make if people think he’s a girl? If it matters to Henry—and it may, but you don’t know that—then sure, offer a matter-of-fact correction . To wit:You: “Oh, he is—he loves it.”You: “Nope. Boy.” My wife is bisexual, and I’ve always been cool with her playing with other women, and sometimes other guys—we have plenty of sex, so I know it’s not about me.
