‘My hero:' Community celebrates life of Park Forest Detective Tim Jones

A celebration of life was held on Saturday for Park Forest Police Detective Tim Jones.

Family, friends, first responders, and community members came together to pay their respects to Park Forest Police Detective Tim Jones during a service at Tinley Park High School.A celebration of life was held on Saturday for Park Forest Police Detective Tim Jones, a person who family members said lived a life filled with purpose, love and courage.

Jones passed away earlier this month. nearly 10 years after a shooting during the line of duty left him paralyzed. Family, friends, first responders, and community members came together to pay their respects to the fallen law enforcement officer during a service at Tinley Park High School.Relatives said his smile and laughter were contagious, his energy was unmatched and his bravery and dedication will never be forgotten. “May we honor him not only with words today, but by living with the same sense of duty, compassion, and respect for one another that he demonstrated throughout his life,” said Park Forest Police Chief Brian Rzyski.“We celebrate this superhero who gave everything,” said Park Forest Mayor Joseph Woods. “Tim did not lose his life—he gave it to an entire community.”The second-generation police officer graduated from Tinley Park High School in 2009. He went on to play college football before joining the Park Forest Police Department in 2015. “Ultimately it was Tim who taught us what it means to be strong, kind, resilient and to never give up,” said Dr. Theresa Nolan, Tinley Park High School principal.Despite the challenges he faced after the shooting, family and friends say he never let it stop him—he persevered. “Tim, you are my hero for what you did on March 19, 2016,” said one mourner. “But even more so for what you did after.”“I would challenge anybody to try to do their best to follow in Tim’s footsteps," Kyle Rodriguez said."He was definitely a leader, he’s truly going to be missed.”
