My Hero Academia's villains get an X-Men makeover.
My Hero Academia has always drawn inspiration from Western Comics, so it is appropriate that its latest manga volume release features a stunning variant cover by X-Men artist Pepe Laraz. The cover does an incredible job of bringing some of mangaka Kohei Horikoshi’s most iconic characters to life in a different style. It also underscores the interdependent nature of Eastern and Western comics.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT On Twitter, artist Pepe Larraz shared a variant cover they drew for Ki-oon Editions’ release of volume 37. The cover, which is colored by Marte Gracia, gorgeously depicts the members of the League of Villains in a style more similar to the Western superhero comics they were heavily influenced by. This is fitting given Pepe Larraz worked on the iconic House of X and Powers of X series, which redefined the X-Men for the modern era.
Pepe Larraz & Marte Gracia Reimagine My Hero Academia's Villains Volume 37 sees an escalation in the battles of the Final War arc as Deku finally arrives to fight Shigaraki. Deku and Shigaraki’s clash is easily the most exciting part of the volume, but no less important is a clash between the heroes and an army of disenfranchised mutants led by Spinner.
House of X and Powers of X saw most of mutantkind gather together and form their own nation of Krakoa, completely changing the way the X-Men normally operated. After Shigaraki’s ascension in the Paranormal Liberation War arc, My Hero Academia’s entire status quo also changed, with heroes unable to stop the villains from running rampant across Japan.
My Hero Academia's Variant Cover Shows How Connected Modern Comics Are It is unclear whether My Hero Academia or House of X and Powers of X had any influence over the other, but the fact that Pepe Larraz worked on art for both series is a great example of how interconnected manga and Western comics have become. Larraz isn’t even the only Western comic artist to put their own spin on an iconic manga, with Inhyuk Lee drawing an iconic One Piece scene on their Twitter as well.
