All Might was inspired by an iconic anime hero.

All Might may now be one of My Hero Academia's most famous characters, but as it turns out, series creator Kohei Horikoshi was actually inspired for the creation of the number 1 Pro Hero by perhaps the most famous anime character of all time: Dragon Ball's own Goku.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT In an interview with Anime News Network during his visit to the US for San Diego Comic-Con in 2018, Horikoshi revealed that All Might was, in fact, inspired by Goku of Dragon Ball fame. Horikoshi also mentions doodling Dragon Ball characters while at school when he was younger, so it's perhaps no surprise that the incredibly popular series of his youth was influential on his own character design.

My Hero Academia's All Might Was Based on Dragon Ball's Goku While Horikoshi isn't specific, it's likely that he meant adult Goku rather than kid Goku. All Might and Goku share the distinction of being the strongest in their world, and both are great examples of pure-hearted heroes. All Might and Goku are also both based on physical strength more so than technique, although neither is a slouch at that, either.

All Might fills a distinctly different role in the My Hero Academia story than Goku does in Dragon Ball, as All Might is a mentor figure rather than a protagonist, so it makes sense that he'd have to change a lot to fit that role. When one thinks about it, All Might actually has more in common with the idea of Goku--an unbeatable hero with a powerful transformation who always comes out on top.

Dragon Ball Inspired A Generation Of Artists Whatever the case may be, it's still surprising to hear that Goku was an inspiration for All Might when so much of My Hero Academia draws from Western comics over manga. It just goes to show how incredibly influential Dragon Ball was on an entire generation of manga artists who are now old enough to be creating their own manga.
