My Hero Academia Needs an X-Men reference.
It's no secret that My Hero Academia is heavily inspired by a variety of Western superhero comics, but there is one franchise that it never pays homage to, which is rather unfortuante given the series' core themes. This homage could have surpassed the others and provided depth to a plot thread that the series didn't focus on as much as it should have.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Many of My Hero Academia's comic references take aspects from various characters and graf them into the manga's world. Perhaps the best example of this is All Might being the equivalent of My Hero Academia's Superman and his former partner Nighteye acting similarly to the series' Batman. Neither character is a perfect match, but the broad strokes are there for fans familiar with DC Comics to pick up on.
My Hero Academia Should Have Included a Reference to X-Men Notably absent from My Hero Academia's world is a hero school made entirely for people with Mutant Quirks like Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters in the X-Men comics. This is somewhat surprising given the series has shown other superhero schools besides UA High, which would have been a perfect time to introduce such a place.
The conflict between mutants and regular people has been only briefly touched on in My Hero Academia, despite being a seemingly major societal issue. The biggest focus it has received is in the Final War arc, when the monstrous heroes Shoji and Koda calm a mob of disenfranchised mutants led by Spinner. Now that that part of the Final War is done however it doesn't seem like the series will be returning to the topic any time soon.
Given how important the X-Men are in Marvel Comics, it is unlikely that Horikoshi hasn't heard of them. In fact, the discrimination that Mutant Quirk users face may even be directly inspired by the X-Men. Unfortunately, My Hero Academia didn't go the extra step and add a school referencing Xavier's Academy, as if it did, it could have more fully explored the struggle if mutant heroes in its world.
