But therapists and clinical managers say for the interim, many of us already have the tool we need in our hands: our phones. Counselors say that online therapy tools, along with video messaging with friends, are some of the best ways to handle the grief of losing people to COVID-19. Even medical clinics that have typically only offered in-person meetings have had to adapt quickly to care for an expected surge of patients and have set up phone and video meetings.
“The current situation makes it incredibly difficult — and there’s no way around that completely — but we are coming up with ways to make it easier,” said David Guggenheim, chief behavioral health officer at, an LGBTQ-focused community health center in New York City. “We joke and say we’re super behind the times. But we just leaped forward a century because everyone is setting up video consults and setting up hotlines. It’s something we didn’t do before.
