Maria Henrietta Martinez Hughes has written a memoir about her late father, Ignacio Martinez, who was a deacon at the Archdiocese of San Antonio.

Ignacio Martinez put all 10 children through private school as a self-employed radio and television repairman in San Antonio.When Ignacio Martinez walked his daughter Maria Henrietta down the aisle of St. Joseph Catholic Church for her wedding in 1992, he did so as both a proud parent of 10 and as a permanent deacon who presided over the ceremony.
"So he was like a father to so many people, not just us," Hughes said."He had that fatherly instinct." Ignacio Martinez shown in 1984 unloading flour at Immaculate Conception Parish, where the church deacon was active in the St. Vincent de Paul Society assisting families in need.That grace extended well beyond his doorstep. Between raising a family and running a business, Martinez dedicated more than 40 years to the St. Vincent de Paul Society at Immaculate Conception Parish, most of them as the group's president, where he often volunteered and helped stock the emergency food bank.
She noted his education stopped at the eighth grade because discrimination was so rampant in Sabinal the school district did not allow Mexican Americans into high school. That forced a teenage Ignacio to work in cotton fields and then later peddle fruits and vegetables.
