Bringing my Chopova Lowena midiskirt home took three months, two phone calls, and many tariff-related searches.

I had been influenced by a recovering shopaholic on TikTok who’d somehow clicked her way to five figures of credit-card debt. The problem is that she has excellent taste, so whenever she talks about her no-buy challenge while wearing some exquisite selection from her wardrobe of blackout purchases, she just makes you want to whip your credit card out faster.

.at a closet-clean-out sale. The skirt followed the classic Chopova template — a curtain of deadstock fabric is patched together, pleated, and chained to a studded leather belt — but the longer length and mottled, richly hued pattern made it feel more sophisticated than the plaid midis I had seen. It was a $1,138 relapse buy, and it lookedA few days later, a fashion-PR acquaintance I’d just met DMed me a link to the same skirt; it was on sale for around $650. “This is now the time,” she announced. So with money from my 2024 tax return, I ordered the midi along with some discounted hoops from my current favorite jewelry designer, Justine Clenquet. It was the first garment in recent memory that I did not buy second-hand off a rack on the street for under $50. The next day, June 2, Ssense notified me that my package had been shipped via Canada Post and would arrive in four days. Yet nothing showed up at my door. I consulted the USPS tracker and saw that my package had arrived at an international distribution center in Jamaica, Queens. I waited for a few weeks. Still no package. Was this because of the tariffs? Admittedly, I had not been paying much attention earlier this year when President Donald Trump initiated a global trade war byon imported goods and triggered retaliation from major trade partners like China and Mexico. My Chopova Lowena skirt was manufactured in Bulgaria but shipped from Canada, both of which had been significantly affected. Did that explain the holdup? Or was the USPS simply suffering from DOGE mismanagement? Digging online for answers, I found a fewof people who’d also experienced holdups at the Jamaica distribution center; in the end, they got their packages all right. I was in the midst of searching for a new apartment and felt stupid thinking about clothes when the news was so atrocious —New lease signed in early July, I periodically refreshed the USPS tracker and double checked that I’d signed up for delivery alerts, but the package hadn’t budged. I filed a missing-package request with USPS, just in case, and thought about taking the LIRR to Jamaica. In early August, the tracker updated to say that the package would be returned back to Ssense in Montreal after I had apparently failed to claim it. Huh? I called the Ssense customer-service hotline only to be told by an agent that there was nothing they could do except send it back my way after it landed in Montreal. She offered a 10 percent discount on my next order up to a maximum of $100, all but daring me to torture myself again. At the time, I was battling National Grid for surprise gas-inspection charges and my obscure-oligarch-fixer former landlord for my security deposit. My money was everywhere but my bank account. It had been three months since I had purchased the Chopova skirt; I just wanted a refund. So I contacted Ssense customer service. This morning, they finally responded and notified me that USPS had tried to deliver the package to my old address — though I had not received anything — and that I could pick it up at the nearest post office. I did. It looks perfect, and I didn’t have to pay any tariffs.28 Best Sneakers for Women in Every Single StyleMy Once-in-a-Million-Years Love StoryIn a statement posted to Instagram and TikTok, the beauty influencer wrote about the “pain, heartache, and void” of losing her son.Dior Lip Glow Butter and Blush Stick: Do You Need Them?An Ssense spokesperson told The Cut the decision was made “in light of significant economic headwinds facing the retail sector.”Gucci Beauty Needs to Go Back to the Lab for Its Latest LaunchThe rapper can’t help but be charming and turn looks, even as she’s being sued for alleged assault. What Happened Between Taylor Townsend and Jelena Ostapenko at the U.S. Open?
