{Reuters}Instagram was banned by the Chinese government in 2014 and has long trailed behind other apps in the country, such as WeChat, Weibo and now social e-commerce platform Xiaohongshu. But those who do use the app are often well-educated, well-traveled and affluent members of the Chinese population who access Instagram through VPNs. Because of this demographic, brands still have marketing success in China despite the ban.
