The Outer Banks are home to 34,000 residents, including 500 who live in the area north of Corolla. That specific area also has a population of 102 wild horses., these four-legged animals graze at vegetation, wander and live their lives. They are descended from a Colonial Spanish breed whose ancestors were believed to have been dumped off the coast less than 2 miles from shore hundreds of years ago. One theory is ships had to lose weight in a storm, another is the horses were shipwreck survivors.

To call it a neighborhood would be a stretch. You see houses – and that’s it. No businesses, convenience stores, churches, schools, parking lots – nothing. This is made for people who want the beach life and do not want to be bothered. The only people we saw were construction workers. As we drove by one particularly large house under construction, our driver-tour guide told us Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is building it for his equestrian daughter.

These indigenous creatures have one very big difference from their more domesticated brethren: The stomachs of the Outer Banks wild horses do not digest sugar. Their diet counts out apples, carrots and sugar cubes, which could kill them. So the “Do not feed horses!” warning is more than an admonishment; it’s a way of life. Their organic diet is primarily the grass that grows through sand.We paid about $50 each for a roughly two-hour tour.

Outside you can walk up a hill where a monument offers a vantage of the area where the plane took off and where it traveled. The approximate 900-step climb to the monument offers a nice view of the grassy field where the flights took place. Along that route are boulders marking their distances.
