The Office of the Muskingum County Prosecutor released a statement on Friday after a K-9 Cooper died from heat exhaustion in an unmarked car on September 5.
The vehicle Cooper was in lacked the proper safety features that marked vehicles normally have to prevent overheating, such as alarms and safety devices. The county office stated they have received the investigative packet from law enforcement regarding the death of the police K9.
Muskingum County Prosecutor Ron Welch said the following in his statement: The death of K9 Cooper is tragic to members of our community and to law enforcement. I will be conducting a thorough review of all reports, witness statements, and evidence collected by investigators before making any decision regarding this case. This process ensures that any decisions are based solely on facts and the rule of law. Regardless of who is involved, my office always strives to hold everyone accountable under the law. This comes over a month after the K-9 passed away in an unmarked vehicle that lacked the proper safety equipment. Sheriff Matthew Lutz explained that it is not uncommon for K-9s to be left in a handler's vehicle with the engine running for extended periods.
