The muskie stockings are the result of six months’ worth of efforts by fish management and hatchery staff to create trophy fishing opportunities in Ohio.
Beginning each April, hatchery and fish management staff collect eggs from broodstock muskellunge in Leesville Lake in Bowerston, Ohio. The eggs are sent to the London and Kincaid hatcheries, where they are hatched and raised to 10-12 inches before being released in September.
The good news for fishermen this week is that as those waters cool with the colder nights, the game fish are slowly moving closer to the Ohio shoreline — and saving plenty of marine fuel — for those boaters running 20 miles or more to deep water and trolling for the big fish.The top locations for trophy walleye have been the 70- to 75-foot depths from Cleveland and Lorain to Geneva and Conneaut.
The schools of perch had been hard to find in the Central Basin of Lake Erie in recent years, a reason the daily bag list had been reduced to just 10 perch a day from Huron to Conneaut, but some decent catches are finally luring anglers. While a few trout have been seen in the Northeast Ohio rivers and streams, a gully washer or two is needed to lure the trout into their spawning waterways.
