House Speaker Mike Johnson secured support from Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, leaders of the DOGE (Department of Government Efficiency) initiative, for a temporary government funding bill as a partial shutdown looms. Johnson emphasized the need for the bill to clear the way for a renewed focus on President-elect Trump's 'America First' agenda in the new Congress.
"We get to March where we can put our fingerprints on the spending."House Speaker Mike Johnson speaks to reporters following a House Republican conference meeting with Rep. Blake Moore and Rep. Steve Scalise on Capitol Hill in Washington, Dec. 17, 2024.
"We gotta get this done because here's the key. By doing this, we are clearing the decks, and we are setting up for Trump to come in roaring back with the American first agenda. That's what we are going to run with gusto beginning January 3 when we start the new Congress," he said. The push comes as Republicans and Democrats scramble to pass a bill before government funding expires Friday night.
Johnson at a press conference said his hands were tied after "acts of God" necessitated additional money.
