After facing opposition from residents concerned about property values and aesthetics, Murphy USA has revised its proposal for a gas station at the corner of Broad and Government Streets in Mobile, Alabama. The company will present the modified plans to the Architectural Review Board on Wednesday, hoping to address concerns raised since February.

Representatives of gas station giant Murphy USA held their tongues following a February meeting of Mobile's Architectural Review Board.

"In this particular corner,” says Flowers, “three historic district meet... Church Street East, Oakleigh Garden District and Old Dauphin Way. It's the gateway into Historic Mobile. There are other developments that would be lovely... a retail with living quarters above, a boutique hotel. There are all kinds of things that would be acceptable. But there is nothing ascetically pleasing about a gas station and a lighted canopy 24 hours a day.

Ornamental lighting and a white stucco exterior have also been added to the mix, giving the proposed business a more favorable look. "Everybody knows the issues that come with a gas station," says Cory Harris, who lives directly across Government Street from the site."24-7 lights, and then, the traffic, coming in and out. You know, they've spent millions of dollars to make it flow better traffic wise on Broad Street and Government Street and they might just mess it all up by sticking a gas station there.
