“Our reality is dramatically different than a lot of other states right now,” Governor Murphy said. “Because we’ve gone through it first, we can responsibly take this step.”
New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy will end masking rules for schools and daycares next month, no longer requiring students, staff and visitors to wear face coverings while indoors.
State data shows the rates of infection among students and staff dropped the last week of January, compared to the week before. There were 33 new, in-school outbreaks at the end of January, up from 26 the week prior, according to those numbers. Statewide, hospitalizations have dropped by a third from the week before and are now hovering around 1,900.
Murphy will also extend the state’s public health emergency which expires this week for another 30 days in order to keep the masking rules in place through March. He“We are cautiously optimistic that the current statewide school mask mandate can be safely relaxed in the near future, assuming current trends continue,” the New Jersey Education Association, the state teachers union, said in a statement.Masking rules inside state buildings remain in place.
