As the coronavirus pandemic tightened its grip on New Jersey, Gov. Phil Murphy’s usual Statehouse foes went silent. That goodwill is quickly fading.
select committee is being formed to investigate the state’s response to the virus. Senators on both sides of the aisle have become increasingly critical of the governor’s cautious reopening strategy — which they claim caused undue harm to small businesses — as well as his administration’s alleged mismanagement of deadly Covid-19 outbreaks at long-term care facilities and state prisons.
“The government should not be in the business of picking winners and losers,” state Sen. Mike Testa , who is representing small businesses in a lawsuit targeting Murphy’s stay-at-home order, told reporters during a conference call last week. “And unfortunately, Gov. Murphy, in an act that is quite frankly not backed by science at this point — not backed by common sense at this point — has picked winners and losers.
The most recent polling was done in late April, not long after the pandemic pushed hospitals in North Jersey to the brink of capacity. It remains to be seen whether public opinion will shift in the coming weeks as case totals enter a period of prolonged decline thanks to social-distancing restrictions.
