JUNEAU, Alaska - After Alaska’s senators criticized DHS secretary Kristi Noem ’s leadership, her firing opens a gap in new management which the delegation seems to largely support. “Senator Markwayne Mullin has my support,” Sen.
Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaksa, said in a statement to Alaska’s News Source Thursday. “He has maintained strong relationships in both the House and Senate, and been an effective liaison between Congress and the administration.” “ is very smart and works well with members on both sides of the aisle,” Sen. Dan Sullivan, R-Alaska, also said in a Thursday statement. “He’s a great choice and a strong advocate for defending our homeland. “Markwayne will work tirelessly to Keep our Border Secure, Stop Migrant Crime, Murderers, and other Criminals from illegally entering our Country, End the Scourge of Illegal Drugs and, MAKE AMERICA SAFE AGAIN,” Trump said on Truth Social. Rep. Nick Begich was the first to tell Alaska’s News Source he backs Mullin’s promotion, but the congressman will not vote to confirm the senator to lead DHS. “I’ve had the opportunity to interact with Senator Mullin during my time in Congress and know him to be a serious leader who cares deeply about serving the American people,” Begich said in a statement Thursday. “The Department of Homeland Security plays an imperative role in protecting our nation, and I believe he will do a fine job leading the department.”“For Alaska, DHS carries particular importance through the work of the U.S. Coast Guard in protecting Arctic security,” Begich said. “I look forward to working with Senator Mullin to ensure Alaska’s unique needs are recognized as we continue the work of securing our nation and supporting the men and women who serve on the front lines every day.”by Pres. Donald Trump Thursday and came after bipartisan criticism of her leadership, including from Alaska’s congressional delegation, which ramped up after the death of two US citizens at the hands of DHS agents. “I think the President needs to look at who he has in place as a secretary of Homeland Security,” Murkowski previouslyThe videos I’ve seen from Minneapolis yesterday are deeply disturbing. As we mourn this loss of life, we need a thorough and objective investigation into how and why this happened—which will require full cooperation from the Departments of Justice and Homeland Security, along…“The loss of civilian life in Minneapolis is a tragedy, and all sides need to focus on de-escalation and lower the temperature so the violence in Minneapolis dissipates,” Sullivan wrote. In his Thursday statement, he said her leadership has ultimately been beneficial for the state, mentioning efforts toward building up the Coast Guard. “I particularly appreciated the Secretary’s responsiveness and help securing FEMA assistance in the aftermath of Typhoon Halong and sending her team up to our state,” he said. The push for new DHS leadership also comes as the department has not been funded, creating a partial government shutdown and preventing DHS arms like the TSA from being paid. That shutdown happened in large part because of Democrat disapproval of Noem’s leadership - calling for reforms after the Minneapolis deaths. “We’re ready to sit down with anyone, anytime, anyplace, if they are serious about the types of dramatic reforms that are necessary to get ICE under control,” House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-New York,‘Like a jet blasted you in the face’: 85 mph Arctic storm winds trap 150 people at Alaska basketball tournamentSand Point community ‘reeling’ after teen goes missing after falling out of canoeIran war strikes could shape future of Alaska natural gas, key developer says ‘Practical implications:’ Sen.
