Gary Haggarty subsequently pleaded guilty to 202 offences which included five murders
A murder trial has heard how a UVF chief and top supergrass walked into a police station to confess his crimes.
Mr Convie and Mr Fox died in a hail of bullets that were fired from a gunman standing in a North Belfast playground on May 17, 1994. He said after the initial approach, detectives from the PSNI's SOCPA's office would carry out what he described as "scoping interviews'' which would allow police to understand what offences the person had committed.
Finally, a "contract'' is drafted by the PPS's "special prosecutor" with the person to become an "assisting offender'' under SOCPA. Haggarty subsequently pleaded guilty to 202 offences committed between 1991 and 2007 which included five murders, five attempted murders, one of aiding and abetting murder, 23 counts of conspiracy to murder along with offences of firearms, explosives and punishment shootings. A further 301 offences were taken into consideration.
Under cross examination, Mr Borrelli asked: "Who approached who? Did Haggarty approach police or did police approach Haggarty?''
