Join Laura Whitmore and Iain Stirling on a chaotic journey through crime...

It’s now one of the most iconic works of art in the world, but Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa was once exhibited without any real security. This was famously taken advantage of in 1911 by Vincenzo Peruggia, an Italian man who stole the painting from the Louvre Museum in Paris.Murder They Wrote: The Mona Lisa is Missing.Born into a poor family from a small Italian Alpine village, Vincenzo Peruggia moves to Paris at the age of 20, in search of a better life.

Vincenzo is so incensed by the looting of Italian artwork that many believe his patriotism – perhaps fuelled by the prejudice he faced - was a motivation for the theft.Vincenzo Peruggia steals the Mona Lisa on Monday 21st August, 1911. The Louvre is closed for cleaning and there are just 12 security guards on duty rather than the normal 116.

The Spanish painter and sculptor Pablo Picasso is one of the suspects because he is friends with poet Guillaume Apollinaire, who has connections to some other items stolen from the Louvre. In Florence, Vincenzo attempts to sell the painting for 500,000 lire, about £2 million in today’s money.
