Witnesses said Jose Damian Canales got mad over the slow counting of cash, then shot the counter, Steven Lawrence Byars.
A San Antonio man charged in a fatal shooting over the slow counting of cash in a drug transaction has been sentenced to 24 years in prison. As part of an agreement with prosecutors, Jose Damian Canales , 43, pleaded no contest Monday to a murder charge for killing Steven Lawrence Byars , 42, on July 16, 2021. Following a pre-sentence investigation, state District Judge Kristina Escalona found Byars guilty and sentenced him to 24 years in prison.
Byars wanted to buy drugs and Canales was helping with the deal, but became frustrated about how long it took for Byars to exchange coins for bills, according to the affidavit. Canales left the house and Byars chased him to confront him, a witness said, hearing Byars yell, “You shot me, you shot me in the stomach” after a shot rang out, the affidavit stated.
